Vietnam’s Phu Quoc voted into top 10 islands in Asia

Phu Quoc entered the list with 89.77 points given by readers of Condé Nast Traveler, a luxury and lifestyle travel magazine published by Condé Nast — a global mass media firm based in the U.S.

Located in the Gulf of Thailand and to the southwest of Vietnam’s mainland, Phu Quoc is the largest island of the country with an area of 573 square kilometers and administered by Kien Giang Province.

Phu Quoc is known as the ‘pearl island,’ endowed with clear blue water beaches such as Bai Sao and Bai Dai, and plenty of local specialties including seafood, pepper and pearls, among others.

It also has well-known destinations including the busy Duong Dong town, Ham Ninh and Ganh Dau fishing villages, and other attractive tourist points.

Phu Quoc, previously a district of Kien Giang, was turned into the country’s first island city on March 1, 2021, pursuant to a resolution issued by the Vietnamese National Assembly’s Standing Committee in late 2020.

Topping the top-10 list is Boracay, a Philippine island that is located 300 kilometers south of the capital Manila and has an area of only around 10 square kilometers.

The island was followed by Bali of Indonesia, with 93.9 points, and Koh Samui of Thailand, with 92.13 points.

The Philippines has another island, Palawan, named in the list at the eighth position, while Thailand has two more entries, including Phuket and Phi Phi Islands, ranking fifth and tenth respectively, making it the nation with the most in the top ten.

The other islands honored in the list include Malaysia’s Langkawi, at the fourth place, Sri Lanka, at the seventh position, and Okinawa & Ryukyu Islands of Japan, at the ninth place.

In addition to annual voting for the most favorite islands, the magazine’s readers also choose the other categories including the most favorite countries, the best cities, the best resorts, and the most beautiful resort islands, among others.
